Time and time again you hear about a company having all of their users' passwords, or "password hashes", compromised, and often there's a press response including one or more prominent security researchers demonstrating how 1,000 users had the password "batman", and so on. It's surprising how often this happens considering we've had ways to do password authentication that don't expose users' passwords, or at least makes it significantly harder to crack them, for several decades.
Personally, I think it boils down to a fundamental misunderstanding about what cryptographic hash functions are and what they are—or should be—used for, and a failure on the part of security researchers and advocates, myself included, to properly explain and emphasize the differences. So here's an attempt to explain why "SHA 256-bits enterprise-grade password encryption" is only slightly better than storing passwords in plain text.

This article explains the theory for how to store user passwords securely, as well as some example code in Python using a Bcrypt library.
1. Separate subject from body with a blank line
2. Limit the subject line to 50 characters
3. Capitalize the subject line
4. Do not end the subject line with a period
5. Use the imperative mood in the subject line
6. Wrap the body at 72 characters
7. Use the body to explain what and why vs. how

Video DownloadHelper 5 is a complete rewrite of Video DownloadHelper 4.9.24.
Over the years, Video DownloadHelper 4 got several structural changes in the code to adapt to Firefox internal API modifications. We had to do those major architectural redesigns in emergency, which lead the code to a situation where every new modification, even minor, had a high risk to break everything. This is why you haven't seen updates in a while.

I import all my photos with Shotwell into a folder within my Dropbox so all the photos are available to other devices. However, most importing is done on Linux laptop and while photos are available on the Linux desktop (a separate machine) the databases seem to be different so I have difficulty locating photos. Can anyone suggest a remedy ? Supplementary question - if I add tags to the photos on, say the desktop, are these applied on the laptop as well ?
imgdupes is a command-line tool that finds duplicated images in a directory tree. The difference with other file-oriented utilities (like fdupes) is that imgdupes is specifically tailored to JPEG files, and compares only the image data chunk, ignoring any metadata present in the file (EXIF info, tags, titles, orientation tag...). This makes possible to find duplicated images when one of the file's metadata has been modified by imaging software, and byte-by-byte comparators fail to report them as equal. This might happen in a number of situations.
